Een tentaculair kunstproject over digitale wezens in een ‘niet-menselijk’ tijdperk, ontwikkeld door performanceduo Boogaerdt/VanderSchoot voor Theater Rotterdam.
Vanuit de gedachte dat het humanisme failliet is en dat we op zoek moeten naar een nieuwe, gedifferentieerde versie van menselijkheid waarin we ook de niet-menselijke levensvormen betrekken, onderzoekt Boogaerdt/VanderSchoot wat het betekent om kunst te maken in ‘the non-human era’, een tijdperk waarin de mens niet langer de maat der dingen is. Vanuit de centrale vraag: ‘Als de mens niet het centrale object is, wat is dan menselijkheid?’ zoekt het performanceduo naar de relevantie van het theater in een nieuwe tijd. Ze leggen zich toe op het ontwikkelen van nieuwe theatrale vormen en idiomen, die ruimte en betekenis geven aan onze postmenselijkheid en aan de flexibele en meervoudige identiteiten die daaruit voortkomen.

Vanuit het gedachtegoed van bioloog/filosoof Donna Haraway werkt Boogaerdt/VanderSchoot aan een tentaculair project. Midden in een netwerk van contactmomenten met verschillende kunstenaars en disciplines, ontwikkelen ze een serie performances en theatrale uitingen. Flexibel, positief ontworteld en vanuit wisselende coalities, die plaatsvinden op basis van affiniteit in plaats van identiteit, spelen ze met de potentie en creativiteit die het doelbewust verwarren van grenzen hen oplevert. Welke theatrale verschijningsvormen kent de Cyborg als metafoor voor de postmoderne mens die in staat is lichaamsgrenzen te overschrijden; die niet langer gebukt hoeft te gaan onder de beperkingen van sekse, ras, klasse of soort?

A tentacular art project about digital natives in a non-human era, developed from the theatre practice of performance duo Boogaerdt/VanderSchoot for Theater Rotterdam.
From the thought that humanism is bankrupt, and we have to go search for the new, different version of mankind, where we also include the non-human life forms; Boogaerdt/VanderSchoot explores what it means to make art in the non-human era; an era where humans are no longer the standard. From the central question ‘If human beings are not the central object, what then is humanity?’ the performance duo is looking for the relevance of theatre in a new era. They focus on the development of new theatrical shapes and idioms, who give space and meaning to our post humanity and the flexible and multiple identities whom arise from it.

From the theory of biologist/philosopher Donna Haraway, Boogaerdt/VanderSchoot works on a tentacular project. Via a network of meetings with different artists and disciplines, they develop a series of performances and theatrical expressions. Flexible, positive uprooted and from varying coalitions, who are based on affinity, instead of identity, they play with the potency and creativity which deliberately creates confusion of borders. Which theatrical appearances portrays the Cyborg as a metaphor for the postmodern human being who is capable to exceed bodily boundaries? The ones who don’t have to be stooped under the restrictions of sex, race, class or species?
Future Fossils is a series of interlaced trails: a network of art projects on the borders of theatre, music, video and internet arts. Boogaerdt/VanderSchoot plays with the duality between organism and machine, body and spirit, public and private, nature and culture, primitive and civilised, man and woman.
